chapter 3
Have your students take the MI survey. Even though this is not a scientific survey, how might this benefit you and your teaching? What other uses can you think of for using the information you get from the survey?

While it maybe unfeasible to have my students take the MI survey right now, summer vacation. It will be helpful this upcoming school year to have my students take it in small groups. Since we already administer a learning styles survey as I mentioned earlier; this data is available for all staff to pull up as we utilize Powerschool in our schools at Kimberly. We have always expected our teachers to review and process our students styles of learning and since our students and parents have the results; it makes for interesting discussions by all parties.
A school wide or classroom facilitated MI survey would be another tool to meet our students needs. I am sure it would make for adjustments for all students as again we could place it right in our computer system and pulled up for each student and each class. The class and schedule could be built so that one or two particular intelligences are in a class. This would make it easy to focus on say linguistic intelligence; STORY TELLING, JOURNALING,or BRAINSTORMING could be a main part of the teaching opportunities. Furthermore, I imagine teachers would like to be able to focus on one intelligence. Although it could be a rather trying process to put each child in a class with his own intelligence type.It sounds almost futuristic and probably not really the best for students in the long run. However, I am sure teachers may need to adjust their style and presentations. Finally, parents enjoy receiving information on their children and this would be another resource for parents.
Because it is summer I am not able to give the survey but the class that I had this past year is still very fresh in my mind. The survey will benefit how I work with all of my students. The one that comes to mind is the little boy who could not sit in a chair. He would fall out, tip it over, turn it sideways and move it everywhere. He was always on his desk and the person sitting next to him. PE class was the only class he loved. Knowing this is his strength I could have had him up and moving more frequently. We do get up and do dances that teach reading and math skills but he would have benefited from jumping when reading his flash cards and maybe a trampoline in the classroom. I did give him a special pillow to sit on from the OT but I now see that wasn’t enough. We test are students so much today and don’t use the information. I really feel the information we would get from using an MI survey would help us understand the child and how to reach them as a person first then as a student. This would also be great information to share with parents at conference time. I would help them understand their child better and be better able to work with him/her
I will have my students take the MI survey this fall when school starts. By using this inventory I should be better able to meet the needs of my students. Just by knowing what areas they have strenghts in will be empowering as a teacher. This may lead to a better connection between teacher and student.
Also this may lead to less conflict--teacher verses student. For example if you have a more Spatial student you may allow more doodling or an occasional daydream. And if you have a more of a Bobily-Kinesthetic student you may allow for more movement during the lesson. Or you might give them a pipe cleaner or a koosh ball to play with during class.
MI is similiar to making connections with students in your class when the year begins. I do something like a Namecard where I have students give me some highlights of what is important to them. Then I use the notecards to help remember their names. While I peek at their notecards I begin to place the important parts and make some real connections with my students.
It is very important to be able to help students understand that you care about your topic but even more importantly you also care about them outside of the school and you want them to become educated, decent human beings.
My classroom has an abundance of interpersonal types of activites. I scored high in this area. I find myself having the students work in pairs and group work on tests, quizzes and even reading assignments such as mapping. The intraperson activites are very minimal and maybe this is due to fact that I do not like to work by myself.
When my students have a unit involving mathematical skills, I tend to let those high in math skills use their abilities on the board. I am not one to compute numbers in my head.
I do ask other teachers, etc. for their expertise when it comes to art work, construction and mechanical problems. Otherwise, I use alittle humor when I am drawing stick peoplet, etc. on the board. I can hear them laugh right now!!!!!!
I'm the type of person who enjoys another person's strength. I like to acknowledge them in the classroom. As stated in Chapter 2 intelligence development depends on biological endowment, person life history or experiences and cultural background. Therefore each student is special and different. What does bother me is that many times students only want to do what their friends do. What about that tag-a-long!! Peer pressure is needs to be addressed so students can make their own choice.
This isn't my day!!! I've been working on my chapters over the last weeks and have been writing them out. I just put my response to Chapter 2 on Chapter 3. I guess it is time for a break!!
I'll retype it on Chapter 2
This fall semester I would like to use the student's multiple intelligence checklist at the beginning of the semester. I usually do some sort of activities to get to know the class. Th will give me some indication of how students can learn. Then I would like to group them in their highest areas and have them come up with a project involving the subject area of the class. Scuh as in Child Development class they may use a theme "Children in our Society". In the Junior High classes they may develop a project involving "What did I do over the summer?".
This past year I had one of the most misbehaved classes that I ever had in my 32 years of teACHING. I liked every student but as a group they were terrible and knew how to push my buttons. Many of them must be interpersonal and Bodily Kinesthetic Intelligence! I wonder if I knew more about their MI they may have been more courteous, motivated and responsible. As I look back, I should have set up more special activities which included a variety of MI. Even in food classes this could be done.
The cheklists of MI will be valuable to me. This will provide me with insight to my students. I'll be able to share this with parents and other collegues.
Obviously since it is the summer I cannot give the MI survey to my students but I think it could be used as a great tool at the start of the school year. I think it would not only benefit me but I think it would also be great for the students and their parents to see why kids may struggle in some classes and not others as well as their teachers.
I could also see this as a benefit at parent-teacher conferences, IEP meetings, and with meetings with administrators who might be dealing with issues with certain students to maybe approach their discipline problems from a different angle. I know I probably am not the greatest spatial intelligent teacher in the world because with the exception of videos I do not use a lot of visuals with my students. Info gained from the little questionairre would be good for me it could also be good for parents and administrators as well.
